How to Fill Out the Application Form and Access the Application Website for Visa-Exempt Countries
Citizens of 54 countries (Visa-Exempt Countries Inquiry) holding a valid international travel document and a confirmed onward ticket (with a departure date and seat within 144 hours) to a third country (or region) can transit through an open airport in China without a visa for a stay of up to 144 hours.
For example, a South Korean traveler flying from Seoul to a European country via an open visa-free city in China (Inquiry on China Open Visa-Free Cities and Airports) can stay in China’s open visa-free city for 144 hours without applying for a Chinese visa. However, if the traveler is flying from Seoul to an open visa-free city in China and then returns directly to South Korea from the same city, this policy does not apply. Travelers who purchase a ticket to a third country (or region) within 144 hours after entering China are also not eligible for this policy.
Transit Port Restrictions in China’s Open Visa-Free Cities: Travelers transiting through open visa-free cities in China must do so via designated international airports or sea ports in those cities.
Calculation of Transit Stay Time in China’s Open Visa-Free Cities: For travelers using the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, the stay time is calculated from 00:00 on the day following the entry date. The entry day is not included in the 144-hour limit. The actual permitted stay duration will be specified in the temporary entry permit issued by the border inspection authority on the visa page of the traveler’s passport.
Using the 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit Application Form System: From January 1, 2019, travelers transiting through China’s open visa-free cities and applying for the 144-hour visa-free transit can fill out and submit their personal information in advance using the visa-free transit application form system for faster processing at the border.
